Local volleyball players named to District 6 all-star squad

JOHNSTOWN — Bishop Carroll outlasted Bishop Guilfoyle in a marathon five-game District 6 Class A championship game on Saturday.
Thus, when the District 6 all-star team members were released on Monday, it was no surprise that the Huskies had the most area players selected, including two that were chosen to the first team – senior middle hitter Sarah Gomish and sophomore outside hitter Ellie Yahner.
“Sarah is such an all-around player for us and does so many things that sometimes totally surprise me,” Huskies coach Joe Skura said. “I knew in eighth grade that she was going to be an exceptional player, but she has far exceeded my expectations for her. I have seen her do things that I’ve never seen other players do.”
Gomish tops the team in kills with 423, and blocks with 42, but is also strong in several other aspects of the game.
“She has great ability to find the hole and is relentless,” Skura said. “She is a strong passer and at the net, I just love to watch her. She has very good instincts and helps make it happen for the team.”
Skura calls Yahner the unsung hero of the team.
“Ellie is someone who also has amazing all-around ability and comes up big when we need it,” Skura said. “She moved from middle to outside hitter this year and doesn’t get as much press as she did last year, but her defense can mean so much to the team. She also serves well and has strong net play as well as being a strong passer and gets a lot of digs. She has great focus and a will to win.”
The other area selections to the first team are Northern Cambria senior outside hitter Lakyn Fornari and Portage senior middle hitter Olivia McCabe.
The Huskies also have senior middle hitter Hayley Holsberger on the second team. Northern Cambria senior setter Alyssa Walters was also a second-team selection.
