Bishop Carroll moves on to PIAA semifinals

By: By Scott Shindledecker

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Bishop Carroll Huskies volleyball team continued what it hopes is a march to a state championship with a three-set win, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17, over Elk County Catholic Saturday afternoon at Punxsutawney High School in the Class A state quarterfinals.
“This is our first time in the state semis,” Huskies coach Joe Skura said. “Last year, when we got to this point, I think our nerves got the best of us. But tonight, we won and we did it in what I think is very convincing fashion.
“We are certainly proud of the girls for getting to this point. I think the level of play we faced in the Laurel Highlands Conference has prepared us for the competition we have seen so far.”

Bishop Carroll claims District 6-A volleyball title

ALTOONA — Bishop Carroll and Bishop Guilfoyle have been neck-and-neck all season on the volleyball court, so there was little surprise that Saturday’s District 6 Class A championship game was a marathon rather than a sprint before a huge raucous crowd at Altoona High School.
The Huskies, who split with the Marauders during the regular season and earned co-champ honors with them in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, used their big-game experience from last season to survive the five-set match winning 16-25, 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 15-9.
