Tennis teams lose in PIAA tournament

JOHNSTOWN — The stays for Westmont Hilltop and Windber in the PIAA Class AA boys’ tennis team tournament were short ones as the Hilltoppers and Ramblers both exited in Tuesday’s first round.
Westmont Hilltop, winners of the past three District 6 titles, lost to District 3’s ELCO, 4-0, at Leopold Recreation Center  in Altoona. The No. 2 doubles match was not completed because of rain.
The Hilltoppers ended their season with a 16-3 record.
“One of our players said it best after the match. He said, ‘We don’t get to see that competition all year long,’” Westmont coach Mike Kush said. “And he’s right. If we saw more Altoonas and more Hollidaysburgs, we might have fared better. Better competition makes you better.”
District 5 champion Windber lost to Sewickley Academy (District 7), 5-0, at North Allegheny High School in Wexford.
The Ramblers finished 13-3.
“My words to the guys were to be proud of what you accomplished. No one in Windber history did what you did,” Windber coach Joe Podrebarac said.
