Westmont’s Noll wins three golds in swimming

JOHNSTOWN — The District 6 swimming and diving championships took place Friday and Saturday at the Penn State University Natatorium, and the area produced several first-place finishers who advanced to the PIAA championships with their performances.
Westmont Hilltop junior Nollaig Noll, whom Hilltoppers coach John Hicks said was one of the district’s premier swimmers earlier in the season, backed up her coach’s words.
Noll led all local competitors with three first-place finishes.
A sprint specialist, Noll won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.84. She easily won the 100 free in 54.28, a time that was nearly 4 seconds better than the rest of the field.
Noll’s third gold medal came as part of the Hilltoppers’ 200 free relay. Noll, Libby Atterbury, Meghan Albertelli and Hannah Dorian finished in a time of 1:46.18, just ahead of Somerset’s Elexsus Robison, Danielle Owen, Emily Schleich and Mary Mack (1:47.99)
Richland produced a pair of first-place finishers.
Sophomore Mackenzie Yagodich won the 500 free in 5:23.93.
Nathan Mihalko, also a sophomore, won the 100 butterfly in a blistering time of 54.39, which beat the field by more than four seconds. Bishop McCort’s Matt Christina was second in 58.65.
Ligonier Valley sophomore Bethanie Mehary was the 1-meter diving champion with a score of 277.30.
The PIAA championships take place March 13-16 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
