Meyersdale advances to District 5-A final

EVERETT — Second-seeded Meyersdale defeated third-seeded McConnellsburg, 12-2, in six innings during a District 5 Class A semifinal at Everett on Friday.
“This is the best game we’ve had in a while as far as the three facets of the game,” Meyersdale coach Wayne Miller said after his Red Raiders improved to 20-3. “The timing of that is pretty good considering we’re in the district playoffs.”
Meyersdale will face top-seeded North Star (20-0) in the 5-A title game on Thursday.
“I’m glad that we’re keeping it in our conference and our county,” Miller said, referring to the teams’ WestPAC and Somerset County affiliations. “We have a lot of respect for North Star. They have some really talented ballplayers on their team. It’s going to take us playing our best in all three facets of the game for us to win next Thursday.”
North Star beat Meyersdale 16-9 in the regular season. The Raiders’ other two losses were to Greencastle-Antrim and Shade.
Meyersdale pitcher Steve Haer pitched 5 2⁄3 innings, striking out six and walking three. Connor Christner relieved him.
“Steve Haer was tough,” Miller said. “He pitched out of a couple jams. He made pitches when he had to. McConnellsburg had chances early to get back in the game or get even. Steve kept his poise.”
Meyersdale’s Chris Schrock and Lance Leydig each had three hits, and each doubled and scored two runs.
Trent Schrock had a three-run double. Ryan Brown singled and scored three runs.
McConnellsburg’s Dylan Everts had two hits, including a solo homer.
Meyersdale closed the game with a six-run bottom of the sixth inning. The Red Raiders had 10 hits.
