Rockwood win over Township earns shot at District 5 title

With a berth in the District 5 Class A title game hanging in the balance, Rockwood coach John Emert played a hunch. Again. 
With his Rockets clinging to a one-run lead over No. 2 seed Conemaugh Township with two gone in the seventh, Emert ordered a base on balls to Kayla Luprek to load the bases with Leeah Michalides on deck.

Ligonier Valley edged out in 6-AA title tilt


STATE COLLEGE — In his 31 years as a varsity coach Philipsburg-Osceola’s is hard-pressed to remember two better shortstops than the Ligonier Valley’s Maddy Grimm and the Lady Mounties’ Abby Showers being on the field at the same time.
The two certainly were worth the price of admission in Wednesday’s District 6 Class AA softball title game.
In the end, Showers got more opportunities to swing the bat and delivered three hits, including a pair of run-scoring triples, as P-O rallied past the Lady Rams 8-7 in an entertaining title game at Penn State’s Nittany Lion Softball Park.


Bicko headed to Shippensburg

Greater Johnstown High School senior softball standout Tara Bicko signed a letter of intent to Shippensburg University on Wednesday.
Bicko will be a four-year starter when the Trojans’ season begins this spring.
She carries a .604 career batting average and only had struck out once through her first three seasons at Johnstown.


Ligonier Valley edges Chestnut Ridge girls

BEDFORD — There were plenty of mistakes to go around Monday in the PIAA Class AA first-round softball contest between Ligonier Valley and Chestnut Ridge with the two schools combining for 11 errors.
The Rams scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh then held off the Lions for a 6-5 victory.


Meyersdale advances to District 5-A final

EVERETT — Second-seeded Meyersdale defeated third-seeded McConnellsburg, 12-2, in six innings during a District 5 Class A semifinal at Everett on Friday.


Tigers rally ends Trojans’ season


JOHNSTOWN — Top-seeded Johnstown rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning, only to allow six in the sixth as the Trojans lost a 9-7 decision to Hollidaysburg in a District 6 Class AAA semifinal softball playoff game Thursday.
