Hughes nets two in MVP day in Santa Fund Classic

By: Shawn Curtis

It wasn’t hard to find Westmont Hilltop’s Shyleigh Hughes on the field during the girls’ game of the Santa Fund Soccer Classic at Greater Johnstown High School.
The gifted goal-scorer, who netted 107 goals as a Hilltopper, wore her hair in a mohawk style with coloring to celebrate the holiday theme of the matches at Trojan Stadium.
It wasn’t hard to find Hughes on the scoresheet either. Her two goals helped the North All-Stars to a 3-0 win over the South on Saturday.

Using a trio of second-half goals as snow blanketed the pitch at Trojan Stadium, the South All-Stars defeated the North 4-0 in the boys’ half of the Santa Fund Soccer Classic doubleheader at Trojan Stadium.
Game MVP Austin Swihura of North Star netted the first goal in the 20th minute, gaining control in the penalty area before skipping a shot to the lower left.
For the Cougars senior, the game was solid way to end his high-school career, which saw two trips to the PIAA semifinals while playing under coach Chad Duryea.

JOHNSTOWN — One made the Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association preseason all-state team. One could make an argument he was overlooked when it came to selections for the state’s all-state football team. Another could say the same about his soccer season. A fourth will attempt the difficult task of participating in two sports at the collegiate level.
Together Luke Williams, Jordan Spangler, Sean Ingram and Taryn Kramer are four members of the 2013 Bishop McCort High School graduating class continuing their athletic careers at the next level.
