It wasn’t hard to find Westmont Hilltop’s Shyleigh Hughes on the field during the girls’ game of the Santa Fund Soccer Classic at Greater Johnstown High School.
The gifted goal-scorer, who netted 107 goals as a Hilltopper, wore her hair in a mohawk style with coloring to celebrate the holiday theme of the matches at Trojan Stadium.
It wasn’t hard to find Hughes on the scoresheet either. Her two goals helped the North All-Stars to a 3-0 win over the South on Saturday.
SAXTON — Speed and big plays go hand in hand, and Tussey Mountain used both against visiting Shade Saturday night in a District 5-A semifinal contest. Darrin Sipes ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-8 win over the Panthers.
The Shade Panthers entered the District 5 Class A playoffs with upsets on their mind. After dispatching second-seeded Northern Bedford, 42-36, the Panthers (6-5) travel to another higher seed tonight when they visit third-seeded Tussey Mountain in a 5-A semifinal.
The clash is one of three playoff games featuring area squads tonight.
It took a while for Shade to get its game going against host Allegheny-Clarion Valley on Friday.
Once the Panthers found their bearings, they scored 13 unanswered points on their way to a 20-7 win over the Falcons.
Richland’s 25 seniors will be recognized tonight for extraordinary contributions to a program that has emerged as an area powerhouse the past two seasons.
Those seniors will have one more huge challenge as they try to make history this regular season.
The Rams (9-0) face another perennial District 6 power Bellwood-Antis (8-1) at Herlinger Field, with a chance to notch back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, something that hasn’t been done at Richland since the 1957, 1958 and 1959 teams each finished 9-0.
