BERLIN — On Friday night, the Berlin Mountaineers hosted the Meyersdale Red Raiders in the District 5 Class A semifinals, and Berlin came out the winner.
The Raiders got on the board early, but two late Tyler DeArmitt touchdowns helped the Mountaineers come back for the 14-7 victory.
On their opening drive of the game, Red Raiders running back Gavin Berkley punched the ball in from 20 yards out to give Meyersdale the early lead.
On the drive, Berkley rushed for 44 yards on six attempts, including the 20-yard touchdown.
Kicker David Stanton connected on the extra point attempt, and the Raiders led 7-0 at the end of the first half.
In the first half, Berkley and Meyersdale offensive out ran the Mountaineers defense, as Berkley rushed for over 63 yards on 11 attempts and the 20 yard rushing touchdown.
Berlin won the turnover and first-down ratios, one turnover and a 5:4 first-down ratio.
The game did not pick up until late in the fourth quarter, when from the 5-yard line, after a 41-yard gain, Mountaineers running back Braden Fotchman fumbled the ball into the end zone, where it was recovered for a touchdown by DeArmitt.
Kicker Luke Sprowls connected on the extra point attempt as Berlin tied with 5:44 left in regulation.
Later in quarter, with 30 seconds left, DeArmitt caught the game-clinching 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback EJ Custer.
On the drive, Custer and DeArmitt connected for two pass completions for a total 65 yards and the 21-yard touchdown.
Sprowls connected on the extra point attempt as Berlin held on for the 14-7 victory.
“I’ve got to congratulate Meyersdale,” said Mountaineers head coach Doug Paul.
“You talk rivalry games – it took the last eight quarters and three overtimes until the fourth quarter to wake up and play football the way we have been playing all year.”
